OFD Partnership with WASP for 2020 Wildfire Season
Osoyoos Fire Rescue have partnered with WASP manufacturing in preparation for the 2020 wildfire season.
WASP are a major contributor of wildfire equipment and are a registered contractor with the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC). WASP has placed an OFC specified Type 2 Structure Protection Unit (SPU) with Osoyoos Fire Rescue.
Fire Chief Dave McMahon explains - this is a unique opportunity and a huge win for both our community and our members - to have this equipment to both train with and be part of a deployment model should there be a wildfire event that threatens homes, structures or key critical infrastructure.
Osoyoos is a key strategical location in the South Okanagan - SPUs are deployed when BC Wildfire makes that operational decision in conjunction with the OFC. A Type 2 SPU such as this are around $160,000 in total equipment & trailer costs, they weigh around 10,000 to 12,000 lbs and typically have a SPU crew of 6 members.
Having this SPU in our department has significantly broadened the skill set of our members.
